What Is Color Extraction?

Color extraction (palette extraction) automatically analyzes the most representative colors in an image and turns them into a palette.

It's commonly used for brand color inspiration, web design picking, and asset style analysis — a quick way to capture the color mood of any image.

How to Extract a Color Palette

Three steps to extract an image's dominant colors:

  • Upload a local image (PNG, JPG, WEBP, or BMP supported).
  • Drag the slider to choose how many colors to extract (4-16).
  • Click Extract Colors to generate the palette, then click any swatch to copy its HEX value.

Tips

  • For more accurate brand colors, use an image with a clean background.
  • The percentage under each swatch shows how much of the image that color covers.
  • The copied HEX values work directly in CSS, design files, and documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does color extraction work?+
The tool uses a median cut algorithm to analyze every pixel, group similar colors together, and average each group into one representative color — giving you the color combination that best represents the image.
Is more colors always better?+
Not necessarily. 4-8 colors are usually enough to capture an image's overall tone. More colors add more detail but can also produce near-duplicate shades, so pick based on the image's complexity.
What format are the extracted colors in?+
Every swatch shows its HEX value (e.g. #FF5733). Click a swatch to copy it in one click, ready to paste into your design tool.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?+
No. All analysis happens locally in your browser — your image never leaves your device.
