Document Compare (Word/PDF)

Compare two Word, PDF or text documents in the browser with line-by-line highlighted differences.

What is document comparison?

A document comparison tool detects the differences between two versions of a document. After you upload Word (.docx), PDF or plain text files, it highlights every added, removed and unchanged line in color, line by line.

All processing is done locally in your browser — your documents are never uploaded to any server.

How to compare documents

  • Upload the original as Document A and the modified version as Document B. Word, PDF and common text formats are detected automatically.
  • Click Compare and the tool extracts the text of both files and highlights the differences line by line.
  • Green lines are added, red lines are removed, and gray lines are unchanged. Use Export diff to download the result as a text file.

Supported formats

  • Word (.docx) — extracts text from the document body.
  • PDF — extracts text from every page.
  • Text files — .txt, .md, .html, .json, .csv, .xml, .log and source code files are read directly.

Usage tips

  • Comparison quality depends on the extracted text. Scanned PDFs without a text layer are not supported.
  • Large documents may take a few seconds to compare locally.
  • To compare formatting changes, export both versions as plain text first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I compare a Word document with a PDF?+
Yes. The tool automatically detects the format of each file and extracts its text, so any combination of .docx, PDF and text files can be compared.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?+
No. Text extraction and comparison happen entirely in your browser, and your documents never leave your device.
Why can't my scanned PDF be compared?+
Only PDFs with a text layer (digital text) are supported. Scanned PDFs contain only images without extractable text — convert them with OCR first.
What does each color mean in the results?+
Green lines are content added in the modified version, red lines are content that was removed, and gray lines are unchanged. The counters above the results show the totals for each category.
Which formats are supported?+
Word (.docx), PDF, and common text formats such as .txt, .md, .html, .json, .csv, .xml, .log and source code.
